#75: Before and After September 11: ERDC research protected lives on 9/11 and in the ensuing conflicts

Twenty-five years after September 11, ERDC’s research in force protection, blast effects and critical infrastructure remains an important part of the story of how science and engineering helped our nation respond.

In this special episode of the Power of ERDC, we revisit an ERDC Live conversation originally recorded in 2021 for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. The conversation features longtime ERDC leaders Bart Durst and Dr. Reed Mosher, who reflect on ERDC’s work before and after 9/11 and the research that helped protect people, military personnel and critical infrastructure during a defining moment in our nation’s history.

Topics discussed include ERDC’s history of protective research (1:35), how ERDC technologies had been incorporated in the Pentagon prior to 9/11 (7:03), and ERDC’s response after that tragic day (10:37). We also talked about Base Camp protection and IED mitigation (16:01) and research to counter emerging threats (22:30).

As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, we remember those who lost their lives, honor the first responders who answered the call and recognize those who served our nation in the years that followed.
